When Zhang returned from Beijing, he got a serious illness that he could not deal with government affairs for three months.
The government was so evil and wicked that many people rebelled, such as Liu-Futong, Han-Shantong, and Chen-Youqiong. In order to stop peasants' uprisings, the government held a Wushu examination, so as to get rid of all the men who were good at Wushu. When the emperor set orders to hold a Wushu examination, Wushu experts in the country all went to Beijing to take part in the examination. Zhu-Yuanzhang, a Wushu expert of Anhui Province, led his several friends to go for Beijing. When they went by Qingyuan County, Zhang-Quanyi gave them a warm welcome and told them that the emperor had an evil intention. Knowing the emperor's evil intention, they watched out for the emperor's deeds; later they saw through the evil plan and rebelled. After they left Beijing, they had several days' rest in Qingyuan County and declared their rebellion when they returned to Anhui Province.
Later, that Zhang-Quanyi took in the insurrectionists was known by the government, so the emperor sent soldiers to catch him. Zhang already saw through the evilness of the Yuan Dynasty and thought that it was doomed to be overthrown, so he had no interest for the government. He left his official stamp in the county court, packed up baggage and sent his wife to her mother's home overnight. After saw off his wife, he walked to Zhenwu Temple under the moon.
The leader of Zhenwu Temple, Zhang-Yun'an, over one hundred years, was not surprised at Zhang-Quanyi' coming. He smiled and nodded, "I know you will come to me, for it is time for you to practice Taoism. But you have lived and worked in the mortal world for many years, the government will look for you again and again." Zhang-Quanyi felt very sad, for he didn't realize his parents' expectation. The leader comforted him, "what you can do is already determined by nature. Since you have left the government, you should concentrate on Taoism." With the words, he undressed his own hairpin and combed Zhang-Quanyi's hair with the pin, then continued, "Zhenwu Temple is not a safe place for you, which is so near to Beijing, so the emperor's men will find you very easily. I have a classmate who is the leader of Jintai Temple in Baoji County, Shanxi Province, you can go there."
After rested in Zhenwu Temple for several days, Zhang-Quanyi was about to go for Jintai Temple. When departing, Zhang-Yun'an gave him a Taoist name, Sanfeng. He understood the intention of his teacher; Sanfeng meant that the nature, the earth, and the people were all prosperous, which referred to his outstanding contributions as an official. The teacher smiled, "You have been a honest official, making the people have a happy life and the government happy at your work; so you are true to Sanfeng. As to your future life, I have already known that you will have a big fortune and long life than I can say. You will be a founder with millions of students and followers. So it is reasonable to name you Sanfeng."
Thanked and saw good-bye to his teacher, Zhang-Sanfeng began his travel. After traveled through Hebei Province, across Yellow River and over Qinlin Mountain, he got to Jintai Temple at last. The leader of Jintai Temple, Wang-Yunhe, the descendant of Wang-Chongyang, the founder of Quanzhen Taoism, was quite knowledgeable, especially in the Eight Diagrams. Under his tutor, Zhang-Sanfeng had learned a lot.
When he was young, Zhang had learned the Static Qigong from Zhang-Yun'an, so he combined the Static Qigong with the Eight Diagrams, with a purpose to create a new Wushu. However, it was not easy to create a new one, he could not combine the Static Qigong with the Eight Diagrams together. One day when he was practicing, a Taoist in rages went by him and laughed, "All things are coming from the chances, determined by the chances. If the chance is coming, you can make something very easily, or very difficultly." Surprised, he looked the Taoist, not handsome, but have profound philosophy in his words. So he stopped practicing at once and asked the Taoist for some advices. But the Taoist just put one hand in front of the stomach and the other behind the back, and then walked away quickly. Zhang understood the sign that there were many profound experts in the word and that he could not just stay at one place to practice Taoism; instead, he should travel out for more experiences and learning. So with the permission of Wang, he began his traveling, to visit more famous experts and learn more knowledge.
When he traveled to Zhongnan Mountain in Shanxi Province, he found a temple in the dense forest. Looked carefully, he found the name of the temple, Fire Dragon Temple, where came out of smoke and reading voice. So he walked towards it and met by a yellow-haired and yellow-bearded Taoist. Then he recognized that he was the Taoist that he met in Jintai Temple. The Taoist, Fire Dragon Immortal, had cultivated here for over ninety years and would die in three years, so he wanted very much to accept the last student. After traveling over the country, he didn't found a qualified student; when he met Zhang, young and intelligent, he decided to take him as the last student.
After Fire Dragon Immortal took Zhang as student, he gave him another Taoist name, Xuanxuan, meant Mystery, and taught him The Gist of Virtue, to help him understand the secret of Taoism.
As to Book of Virtue by Laozi, he had read for many times, but he could understand new things when Fire Dragon Immortal taught it. Fire Dragon Immortal said, "When the humans respect the nature and the earth, the nature will have a good climate, the earth will have a good harvest; when the humans disrespect the nature and the earth, the nature will wind and rain unlimitedly, the earth will have nothing on, for the nature and the humans are united and change between the cause and the result, influencing each other." Zhang nodded, "I understand that. Now the humans are evil and fighting with each other so that the people have a hard life, so the nature became angry and bring many disasters to the world." Fire Dragon Immortal sighed with emotion, "The troubled world makes the heroes. Some certain man will come out to deal with the troubles so as to make the nature, the earth, and the humans coexist together harmoniously." Zhang asked, "Sir, who is the hero?" Fire Dragon Immortal answered, "He who is conforming to the nature and the people's minds is the hero." Zhang did not ask any more, but remembered the nature and the people's minds in the heart, and decided to travel around to visit heroes and help them.
After learning Taoism in Zhongnan Mountain for four years, he decided to leave there and travel around the country. On the way, he found the government was worse and the people had a harder life than before. When he returned to Qingyuan County, he found the people there all complained the evil government. Though of his wife in her mother's home, so he went there to have a look quietly. There he found just a ruin on the place of his parents-in-law's home. Villagers nearby told him that when he left the government, the government soldiers got to know the location of his wife and came to kill all the family except his wife who had went to Zhenwu Temple to be a nun the day before, and then fired the house.
Thought of that he had brought so much disaster to the father-in-laws, he could not help crying with tears flowing around the eyes. He went to Zhenwu Temple to visit his former with for the last time, and then returned to Jintai Temple and continued his cultivation.
Later, the leader of Jintai Temple died. When he was dying, he asked Zhang-Sanfeng to be the new leader. It was not for two years since he became the leader of Jintai Temple, one thing happened unexpectedly. Sun-Jingde, another student of Wang-Yunhe, who longed for becoming the leader for many years, became very angry and hated Zhang very much, for Zhang had taken away what he wanted. When Sun heard that Zhang was the former county official of Qingyuan County, criminal circularly arrested by the government, so he went to the government nearby and told him on.
When he heard that Sun had told him on, he was in a dilemma: if he goes away, which will bring bad reputation to Jintai Temple; if not, the government soldiers will come to catch him, which will make Jintai Temple worse in reputation. He thought that his own death was less important that the fame of Jintai Temple, so he had an idea. The next day, he pretended that he had died, which made the temple see through the disaster. He wrote on a paper "There is death in the life, the life in the death; there is soberness in drunkenness, drunkenness in soberness; there is the wrong in the right, the right in the wrong; there is the curve in the straight, the straight in the curve. " Then he order vice-leader of the temple, "Put the paper on the Grand Hall. Anyone who understands the meaning of the letter can be the new leader." With the words, he laughed and left Jintai Temple.
