| Boxing
emphasizes three things: skill,
medicine, and art.
Skill, medicine, and art are
the three performances of Wushu.
To exercise Wushu is to combat,
so all kinds of Wushu are centered
in skills; all emphasize the
methods of skills, which is
the attacking character. At
the same time, the exercising
of Wushu can strengthen our
body, regulate the functions
of all organs, heal some diseases,
so as to keep healthy and prolong
the lifespan. Healing bones,
hitting points, massage, guiding
of Qigong, are indispensable
parts of Wushu, which is the
medicine character. Wushu is
an art of his own, is a unity
of these beauties, strength,
speed, rhythm, skill, shape,
which is the artistic character
of Wushu.
Exercise Wushu
without exercising the waist,
Gongfu can be high.
The waist is the king of all
the body; when the waist is
flexible, all the body is flexible;
when the waist is rockbound,
all the body rockbound. The
waist play is the key to display
all the body's movement. The
movements of shoulders, elbows,
wrists, legs and kneels all
depend on the management and
cooperation of the waist. So
we say that the waist is the
axis of the body. If we can
exercise the waist as soft as
a snake, we can freely perform
all kinds of acts. On the other
hand, the waist play is the
base for attacking acts. So
if we can exercise the waist
play well, we can succeed in
learning Wushu.
Exercising
Boxing without a stake, just
as building a room without a
pillar.
Stake work, one of private Gongfu,
is the work that all schools
of Wushu emphasize. Stake work
is one method to regulate the
breath so as to strengthen our
strength by standing stilly.
To name it stake is because
that the exerciser should stand
there as still as a pole; after
a long time exercising, the
exerciser can stand on foot
as steady as the stake of a
pole. Stake work has two kinds:
regimen stake work and attack
stake work. If a boxing learner
lacks of stake work, his acts
will be powerless; so the opponent
will easily hit him down.
Exercise boxing
without real effect, he gets
no result in the end.
To exercise boxing is not same
to exercising Gongfu. Boxing
refers to the way of exercising,
the Gongfu the real effect of
exercising. He, who just pays
attention to the ways of exercising
but not the real effect, will
learn Gongfu in a skin-deep
way, with any value of use.
Exercising Gongfu has many purposes,
such as increasing strength,
improving softness, enhancing
alertness, exercising endurance,
expanding lung capability, and
boosting reaction speed. Only
exercise both the way and the
Gongfu, can we learn real Gongfu,
so that we can overcome the
others.
As steady as
Mount Tai, as quiet as a virgin.
This saying emphasizes that
when fighting, we should be
in a calm mood; only this can
make us calm and easy enough
to grasp his intention, without
being cheated by the opponent,
so that we can make correct
reactions to defeat him. When
fighting, we can be excited,
for in a excited mood, we will
make us in disorder so as to
let out our shortcomings, even
be defeated by the opponent.
Poking away
one-thousand-kilogram attack
by a four-tael force
This saying emphasizes that
we should use wisdom to defeat
the opponent when fighting.
Wisdom refers to being good
at changes, so as to well deal
with surprise attack. Only these
masters who are good at Wushu
and has many experiences can
deal with surprise attacks in
a wise manner. When get to the
wisdom stage, we can defeat
the attack in a wise manner,
or with the opponent's strength.
The bigger the attack of the
opponent is, the more violent
the attack hit back, and the
worse the opponent is. We deal
with the violent attacks in
a small strength, as the saying
? ˇăPoking away one-thousand-kilogram
attack by a four-tael force?
Pay 70 percent
attention to the feet, 30 to
the hands.
70 percent and 30 percent refers
to the relations between the
major and the minor. When one
fights with the other, he should
pay more attention to the opponent's
feet and minor attention to
his hands, because that the
direction and speed of the opponent
are related to his pace. If
his proper pace is held by the
opponent, he is doomed to be
defeated by the opponent before
the opponent begins to attack.
The direction of the opponent's
feet and kneels forecasts his
direction to attack, so attention
to the opponent's feet is very
necessary. This saying offers
a good method to take the initiative
and overcome the rival in a
very easy way.
Attacking where,
look where; looking where, attack
where; attacking and looking
the same way, we can make a
powerful act.
This saying explains the three
methods to cooperate one's hands,
feet and eyes in fighting. When
Wushu masters can deal with
the opponent's attack in a wise
way after many practices, they
also can make subconscious reactions
to surprise attack. The movements
of hands and feet often go before
that of eyes, so the eyes should
follow hands and feet quickly,
which is that attacking where,
look where. In fighting, the
clever masters can sense the
opponent's intention by a look,
and make relative reaction,
which is that looking where,
attack where. When one's Gongfu
comes to a very high level,
the speeds of hands, feet and
eyes are nearly the same, with
high veracity and agility.
Wait still
for the opponent's act, strike
only after the enemy has struck.
Here the still refers to that
we should give a relative still
performance so as to regulate
our strength and wait for the
attack in a casual way, compared
to the opponent. The still also
refers to that we should have
a calm mood to watch carefully
all the movements of the opponent.
Here the act refers to such
unimportant and false movements
made by the opponent so as to
cheat us, and the attacks of
the opponent earlier than ours.
In fighting, we should first
wait still for the attack of
the opponent, then look for
his mistakes, so that we can
find a chance to defeat him,
which is the meaning of the
saying.
Wait still
when the opponent is still;
hit him earlier when he makes
a small movement; make reactions
later than the opponent, but
hit him earlier than he does.
It is very right that he takes
the initiative by a early attack
in fighting, but there often
has many miraculous effect when
strike only after the opponent
has struck. Many schools of
Wushu and masters propose to
strike only after the opponent
has struck. Striking only after
the opponent has struck doesn't
refer to that the speed should
be lower than that of the opponent,
but that making reaction later
and hiting the opponent earlier.
This means that when strike
after the opponent, our speed
must be quicker than that of
the opponent. Wait still when
the opponent is still, which
means that we should not make
movements earlier than the opponent.
Hit him earlier when he makes
a small movement, which means
that when the opponent shows
his intention, direction and
attacking skills, we should
make proper reactions at once
so as to defeat him before his
attack. Make reactions later
than the opponent, but hit him
earlier than he does, in other
words, make reactions later,
but reach the target and defeat
the opponent than he does us.
